Analyst optimistic on Syria as power transition remains relatively calm so far

Syria’s Prime Minister Mohammed Jalali has agreed to hand power to the rebel-led Salvation Government after rebel forces toppled president Bashar al-Assad. As Syrians celebrate an end to decades of authoritarian rule, there are fears the war-torn nation could follow in the footsteps of other Arab dictatorships that descended into violent chaos after the fall of their regimes, including Muammar Gaddafi of Libya and Saddam Hussein of Iraq. Qutaiba Idlbi, a senior fellow leading Washington-based think tank Atlantic Council’s work on Syria, tells CNA’s Asia First that things look different for Syria, as despite the complete collapse of a government and a diverse population, the nation has yet to see sectarian clashes in the past days.
