Austrian butcher and man-baby battle in World Gravy Wrestling Championships | ABS-CBN News

Amateur wrestlers from around the world gathered in a small Lancashire town on Monday (August 26) in the hopes of winning the supreme title at the World Gravy Wrestling Championships. Sixteen males and eight females battled it out in pairs in a pool of the traditional British sauce, throwing each other in the air and soaking audience members standing in the "gravy splash zone". A panel of four judges at the Rose 'N' Bowl pub awarded winners based on the contestant's entertainment value as opposed to their wrestling skills, with costumes also playing a big part in the competition. Traveling from Austria to compete in the luke-warm gravy arena, Markus Dormayer told Reuters that he chose the character of "the butcher" for his wrestling persona because of his occupation and family ties to blood sausages - a dish referred to as black pudding in Lancashire. Dormayer, who came overall second after a grueling final round, explained that his father met one of the event organizers and a local producer of black pudding, Andrew Holt, thirty years ago. "Andrew gave me the recipe for the vegan blood sausage so now I'm here to express my thanks," he said. Other contestants donned unusual costumes, including a man dressed as a baby in a diaper and another wrestler wearing a hotdog suit. Following their turn in the gravy arena, wrestlers can opt to be washed down by local firefighters using coldwater fire hoses. The annual event sees money raised for charities through wrestler participation fees as well as entry fees for audience members.
