Russia's aviation watchdog said Friday that an Azerbaijan Airlines plane which crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday had decided to reroute from its original destination in Chechnya amid dense fog and a local alert over Ukrainian drones. Rosaviatsia, the country's aviation watchdog, said that the captain of the plane had been offered other (Russian) airports at which to land, but had chosen Kazakhstan's Aktau. The Kremlin said that it had nothing to add and that an investigation into the crash in Kazakhstan was ongoing. Meanwhile, Vafa Shabanova, a passenger of the crashed plane said, “About 20 or 30 minutes after takeoff, we felt two explosions. The plane was supposed to land, but it didn’t. Something exploded inside twice. A man’s hand was injured. We panicked." Azerbaijan Airlines suspended a host of flights to Russian cities on Friday and said it considered the crash was caused by what it termed "physical and technical external interference."
