Barbadians encouraged to learn a 2nd language
Given the importance of tourism to the island, the Barbados Language Centre of the Barbados Community College is stressing the need for Barbadians to embrace a foreign language. The Language Centre is playing its part - more recently through its second annual Foreign Language Fair at the Eyrie, St. Michael campus, that focused on the intersection of languages and tourism. Secondary school students were afforded glimpses of the culture of countries in South America, including Venezuela, as well as Cuba and Japan. Director Paul Blackman is optimistic of the future as Barbadians learn a second language. Coordinator of the Foreign Language Fair Lamar Smith says it's important students have options when leaving school and charting their course of study.
