Biden reacts after special counsel declines to bring charges in classified docs case

U.S. President Joe Biden reacted on Thursday to special counsel Robert Hur’s report on Biden’s handling of classified documents, after the Justice Department announced criminal charges were not warranted. “This case is now closed,” Biden told his followers at an event in Leesburg, Va. The report represents a harshly critical assessment of Biden’s handling of sensitive government materials but also details the reasons why he should not be charged with a crime. In responding to the report, Biden made a point of saying that he sat for five hours of in-person interviews over two days on Oct. 8 and 9, 2023, “even though Israel had just been attacked on Oct. 7 and I was in the middle of handling an international crisis.” The investigation into Biden is separate from special counsel Jack Smith’s inquiry into the handling of classified documents by Trump.
