Billionaire Gautam Adani of India's Adani Group indicted in US bribery case
Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world's richest people, has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, U.S. prosecutors said on Wednesday. The White House is aware of the allegations against Adani, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said on Thursday and added that "on the U.S. and India relationship, we believe that it's extremely, stands on extremely strong foundation, anchored in ties between our people and cooperation across a full range of global issues." India's governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said, "The law will take its own course", in response to opposition demands to probe the Adani Group. India's main opposition Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, said, "We are demanding a JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee), but we also want (Gautam) Adani to be arrested." Meanwhile, Kenyan President William Ruto had ordered the cancellation of a procurement process that had been expected to award control of the country's main airport to India's Adani Group.
