Boat travels on oil-marbled river after Peruvian Amazon spill
Indigenous communities in Peru's Amazon have reported an oil spill along the Pastaza River, which has been contained, according to the state-run oil company Petroperu. A video shot by eyewitness Adan Sanchez showed oil creating a marble-like effect in the Pastaza River. Sanchez said the spill was a result of decades of pollution and that local farmers who obtain water for everyday use from the river were affected by it. Reuters was able to independently verify the location with the terrain and river layout that match the satellite imagery. Reuters was able to confirm the date of the oil spill with satellite imagery and corroborating government reports. The spill originated from a Petroperu pipeline in river, located in the northern Loreto department near the Ecuadorian border. Petroperu said that the situation has been brought under control after the company closed the pipeline valves and deployed containment barriers to manage the spill. - Report from Reuters
