Boeing factory workers in the U.S. walked off the job early Friday after union members voted overwhelmingly to reject a tentative contract that would have increased wages by 25 per cent over four years. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers announced Thursday that 94.6 per cent of voting workers had rejected the proposed contract and 96 per cent approved the work stoppage, easily surpassing a two-thirds requirement. The work stoppage involving 33,000 Boeing machinists, most of them in Washington state, is expected to shut down production of the company’s best-selling airplanes but is not expected to affect commercial flights. It represents another setback for the aerospace giant, whose reputation and finances have been battered by manufacturing problems and multiple federal investigations.
