Booked on Air Canada? Tourism expert warns travellers to be proactive in case of pilots strike

Air Canada's pilots are edging closer to setting up picket lines, as the company and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) continue to hold discussions at the bargaining table despite warnings of flight cancellations as early as Friday. Even with Canada's Minister of Labour Steve MacKinnon saying he's optimistic there will be a deal, opposition parties want to ensure a deal is made at the table without Ottawa's influence. The concerns follow on the heels of the federal government making similar comments in the lead up to the CN Rail and CPKC labour dispute, only for the Liberals to impose binding arbitration. In the face of the uncertainty, one hospitality and tourism expert says Air Canada passengers without cancellation protection should start considering their options. “The reasonable thing to do if there is a strike… would be to cancel your flight or to push it back to some other time,” advises Frederic Dimanche, professor and director at the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).
