Bringing local fishing vessels to int'l standards
The Division of Fisheries is undertaking a major re-marking exercise to bring commercial fishing vessels in line with international standards. Chief Fisheries Officer, Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox, says the process is now underway, and will see fishing boats bearing new registration numbers. Dr. Cox explained it is a mandatory exercise and they received assistance from larger vessel owners to test the new process. It will also allow them to know which boats are actively working. Given the number of boats on island, the process is not an overnight one. But the Fisheries Chief made it clear if individuals are not due inspection but want their vessels registered under the new system, they can go to the temporary satellite office at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex.
