Britain returns Chagos Islands to Mauritius after decades of territorial tussles

The UK has agreed to give up to Mauritius the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, putting an end to decades of territorial tussles over the remote but critical cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean. The agreement also includes ceding control of Diego Garcia, which Britain leased to the US in 1966 to use as a military base. The base will remain there. In the early 1970s, the UK evicted almost 2,000 residents to make way for the airbase. Britain later apologised and promised to return the islands to Mauritius once they were no longer needed for strategic purposes. Olly Barratt reports from London.
