President of the Barbados Union of Teachers Rudy Lovell is calling for dedicated and specialised support in getting to the crux of the matter with the ongoing rise in violence and indiscipline across the education spectrum. He says the issue and challenges as it stands cannot continue. And he also stresses the need for parents to play a vital role in combating deviant behaviour, with lessons in conflict resolution and the promotion of dialogue over aggression. Mr. Lovell was speaking during the BUT's Inaugural President's Gala and Award Ceremony under the theme 'BUT 50 and Beyond'. The president also notes that despite financial struggles experienced by some teachers not being paid overdue increments, unpaid allowances, and incorrect salary brackets, with some issues persisting for years, they continue to dip into their pockets to provide essential supplies for their classrooms. And he says despite numerous graduates from the Erdiston Teachers' Training College, there remain numerous vacancies across schools, which he urges education officials to fill promptly.
