At least one teachers' union is calling for more stringent security measures to be implemented at schools across the island. General Secretary of the Barbados Union of Teachers Herbert Gittens notes this is the second week of the term, and already there have been a number of violent incidents recorded. He says the Union continues to urge the authorities to pay particular attention to security at schools. Mr. Gittens also says from reports received, an incident at Hilda Skeene earlier today involving a parent and a teacher is not a violent one, but rather an aggressive one. However, he urges parents to seek to meet with the school's management to iron out any matters. Communications Consultant with the Ministry of Education Gaynelle Marshall confirms a male parent entered the Ruby, St. Philip learning insitution, and behaved in a manner that left teachers and students feeling threatened. She says police were called in to contain the matter, and the school was closed for the remainder of the day.
