Call for old prison to be used as ex-convict rehabilitation facility
A suggestion is being made for the old Glendairy Prison to be used as a second chance facility to rehabilitate ex-convicts. This recommendation from Director of the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit, Cheryl Willoughby. She made the comment amid concerns about high recividism rates. Barbados' re-arrest rate stands at 63%, reconviction 55%, and reimprisonment at 52%. The most recent findings of recidivism in Barbados were discussed at a Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit webinar today. Ms. Willoughby says she's not speaking about recidivists who seem not to want to change their lives, but rather first time offenders who want an opportunity to change.
