Call for unified effort to reduce AMR-related deaths
Barbados wants countries to work together to help reduce deaths attributed to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The call was made by Prime Minister of Barbados and Chair of the Global Leaders Group on AMR, Mia Amor Mottley, in her message to commemorate World AMR Awareness Week. The week, observed from November 18 to 24 every year, is a global campaign to raise awareness and understanding of AMR and promote best practices among stakeholders to reduce the emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections. According to Ms. Mottley, AMR is already associated with five million deaths both directly and indirectly, annually. She says antimicrobials must be accessible and used responsibly. The theme for World AMR Awareness Week this year is "Educate. Advocate. Act Now." It's a call for the global community to educate stakeholders on AMR, advocate for bold commitments and take concrete actions in response to AMR.
