Canada delays MAiD for mental health until 2027
Canada’s Health Minister announced Thursday that the federal government has delayed the expansion of medical assistance in dying (MAID) to people whose sole underlying condition is mental health until 2027. Holland said he made the decision after hearing from provinces and organizations like the Canadian Mental Health Association that more time was needed to implement the change. “The problem is you have the curriculum, you have the materials that people have to get trained by... what we want to make sure is that the system is trained to that standard and that the curriculums are adopted and the systems have fully metabolized what the intention is,” he said. The government had been facing a March 17 to expand eligibility for MAID.
