“Canada lost a giant”: Trudeau pays tribute to trailblazing Indigenous leader Murray Sinclair
Following the death of Murray Sinclair in Winnipeg Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lauded the trailblazing Indigenous leader for his “commitment” to First Nations peoples and to all Canadians, and implored Canadians to “take on the work that he has left us.” “Canada lost a giant,” Trudeau said, as he recalled Sinclair’s achievements, including his leadership on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and his championing of Indigenous rights and freedoms. “To me, he was a teacher, a challenge function, a guide, an elder, a sage—and a friend,” he said. Trudeau added that Canada has made “important strides” on its journey toward reconciliation but admitted there is more work to be done.
