Canadian woman fights for justice after late mother conned in romance scam
An Alberta woman is seeking justice after she says her mother’s life was “taken” by a romance scam. Chantel Westguard says her mother was conned by several people involved in an elaborate and long-lasting romance scam, including a man claiming to be a U.S. sergeant, who contacted her mother online. Jarmila Westguard, 74, ended up homeless and hospitalized as a result of the scam and eventually died on Oct. 14, her daughter said. Westguard says at one point her mother tried to send an envelope with $36,000 in cash across the border but the payment was stopped and her mother was fined. “These people took everything from my mother,” she says. Tomasia DaSilva has more on this tragic story and the uptick in romance and investment scams in Canada.
