Carney says Trump’s 51st state threats “need to stop” before US-Canada trade talks resume | FULL
After wrapping up his first international trip as Canada’s prime minister Monday, Mark Carney spoke at London’s Canada House, detailing his mission to establish deeper ties with key European allies. Among his discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III over the weekend, the growing trade war between Canada and the U.S. were top of mind – as well as President Trump’s threats to Canada’s sovereignty. Carney told reporters that U.S. President Donald Trump’s continued threats to make Canada the 51st U.S. state “need to stop” before his government can sit down for talks on an updated trade partnership. The new Liberal leader also shut down the idea European leaders have been slow to defend Canada against Trump’s rhetoric. “I don’t think one needs to respond to every comment about another country,” Carney said. “We can stand up for ourselves." Regarding a dollar-for-dollar retaliation against Trump’s threats to impose 25 per cent tariffs nationwide on April 2, Carney admitted “there is a limit” to what Canada can do, given the comparison of the respective economies.
