Catch of a lifetime: How 3 men ice fishing in Quebec reeled in a 109-pound Halibut
During an ice fishing trip in Saguenay, Que., over the weekend, three men were met with an incredible surprise, and disbelief, after reeling in a 109-pound Atlantic halibut. While documenting their scientific expedition, Mathieu Aubin captured the once-in-a-lifetime moment on camera. Along with his uncle Rémi Aubin and a close friend, the trio had been gleaning information on halibut fishing for three years — since the sport was allowed in the region. The trio trekked two kilometres, dragging their gear and drilling holes to check the depth of the water and thickness of the ice. It wasn’t before long that they were met by the fabled fish. Not much is known about the species living in the Saguenay — hence the need for a scientific study — though anyone hoping to catch a halibut has to be registered to do so.
