Sky News host Peta Credlin says schools that have shunned teaching fads and returned to basics have seen a “vast improvement” in their NAPLAN results. In August, when the nationwide results were released, it was revealed that one in three children were not proficient in numeracy or literacy, leaving Australia well behind its international peers. The teaching style known as ‘Direct Instruction’ was introduced in 2020 and now Catholic schools have delivered their best NAPLAN results. “Schools that are returning to a back-to-basics curriculum, well they are strongly improving and ... the turn-around for those schools has been as dramatic as it is fast,” Ms Credlin said.
