Chairperson of the Committee on Gender and Children Affairs in the Sierra Leone Parliament, Hon. Catherine Zainab Tarawallie has said the newly passed Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2024 strictly bans marriage for individuals under the age of 18, making it a criminal offense to participate in any form of arranging child marriages. The Act was informed by alarming data showing approximately 800,000 children had undergone child marriages in the country. Violations of this Law can result in a 15-year prison sentence or fines of NLe50,000. These measures aim to safeguard minors from exploitation and abuse.
