Child fatalities equate to “about 40% of all deaths in Gaza”: Save the Children International
Forty per cent of the 37,500+ estimated deaths in Gaza – amid the Israel-Hamas conflict – are children, according to Save the Children International. “What we know is that at least 17,000 children are estimated to be unaccompanied or separated from surviving family members and at least 4,000 children are likely to be buried under the rubble,” Alexandra Saieh, a representative for the children’s rights charity, told reporters on Friday. This comes as Save the Children's child protection teams have reported a need for urgent action to protect separated and unaccompanied children, a task complicated by the escalating security situation in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli forces have been occupying much of the Palestinian enclave in its mission to “destroy” Hamas – a response to the militant groups’ attack on southern Israel, in which more than 1,200 Israelis were killed and roughly 250 were taken hostage. Saieh says the toll of Gaza’s retaliation could “span generations.” “It will impact them physically and mentally,” she said.
