Chilean women rally in support of abortion rights

Wearing green handkerchiefs – a symbol of the fight for the legalization of abortion in Latin America – hundreds of women in Chile took to the streets to mark the International Safe Abortion Day. Protesters danced and chanted in Santiago while demanding the government ensure their access to safe abortion. The Chilean legal framework only allows abortions under three exceptions; when the pregnancy endangers the life of the pregnant person, when the pregnancy is the result of rape or due to fetal non-viability. Between 1931 and 1989, women in Chile had access to abortion, since the Health Code allowed it for therapeutic reasons, which permitted a broad interpretation. In August 1989, the military junta decided to prohibit it without a democratic debate.
