Three guards of honor raised the national flag to the top of the flagpole. After a few moments, the flag was slowly lowered to half-mast, marking the start of National Memorial Day for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. In 2014, China's top legislature designated December 13 as National Memorial Day for the victims, commemorating the day Japanese troops captured Nanjing on December 13, 1937.
