Forty-five years later, China has transformed from a poor, agrarian country into a modern global power with a pivotal role in global economic growth. China's GDP in 2022 was about $18 trillion, the world's second largest, which accounts for about 18.6 percent of the world GDP, compared to a little less than $150 billion in 1978. Despite the world's various setbacks, China has kept a high level of opening up to the outside world, and work with other countries on global peace and security.
