China condemns Canada for imposing sanctions over alleged human rights violations
China’s foreign ministry has strongly condemned Canada for imposing sanctions against eight former or current senior officials over alleged involvement in “grave human rights violations.” “The Chinese government adheres to the people-centred development ideology, attaches great importance to respecting and safeguarding human rights,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said in Beijing on Wednesday, denying the “slander.” On Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly announced the sanctions specifically as a response to alleged government-led repression of ethnic, religious minorities and those who practice Falun Gong in China. Furthermore, Ning said Canada’s “double standards and hypocrisy” had been exposed. “Canada's own human rights record is riddled with problems, and to this day, Indigenous people are still facing systematic racial discrimination and unfair treatment,” she added.
