‘China has abused the market’: Australia should support US tariffs on China
Australian Strategic Policy Institute Executive Director Justin Bassi has urged Australia to support the United States in imposing sanctions and tariffs on countries who are “doing bad things” like China and Russia. US President-elect Donald Trump has announced 10 per cent tariffs on Chinese goods. “It will all have an economic impact, that’s right, but we have to be willing to have some type of economic impact if a deal related to our security and sovereignty,” Mr Bassi told Sky News Australia. “I separate tariffs and sanctions against friends and allies like Australia from tariffs and sanctions on countries who are doing bad things like China and Russia. “When someone says there shouldn’t be any tariffs ever because that is a breach of the free market, the problem is China has bought the market, they’ve stolen the market, they’ve abused the market, so there is no free market. “We should be supporting the US to impose sanctions and tariffs.”
