Colombia’s “Youth in Peace” (Jóvenes en Paz) program, launched by President Gustavo Petro, offers at-risk youth between the ages of 14 and 28 a monthly grant of about $250 to steer clear of gang violence. Since its start in October 2023, nearly 3,000 young people from high-crime areas, such as Buenaventura and Medellin, have benefited, using the funds for education, small businesses, or to support their families. Though the program has faced criticism from Colombia’s right-wing opposition, claiming it could fund armed groups or involve corruption, supporters say it provides crucial opportunities for young Colombians to escape gang life.
