Ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur, India, has caused over 250 deaths and displaced tens of thousands since May 2023. The violence has severely disrupted daily life, blocking trade and travel. A community school for displaced children in Churachandpur is providing education to over 400 children, many from relief camps. However, students face hardships due to poor living conditions, trauma from witnessing violence, and limited access to resources. The conflict has made it difficult for displaced students to pursue competitive exams due to financial and logistical barriers. This is the story of Thenkhosei Haokip, the principal of a community school for displaced people, who tells Al Jazeera about the impact on students.
