Conservatives condemn Canada's “punishing cap” on oil, gas sector
Canada’s Conservatives have condemned the Trudeau government's announcement that oil and gas producers nationwide will be required to cut down their greenhouse gas emissions by approximately one-third over the next eight years. “All this will do is chase investments and jobs to other countries. But that's something this prime minister is good at,” Conservative MP Andrew Scheer said of the “punishing cap” on Monday, during question period in the House of Commons. Energy minister Jonathan Wilkinson and Environment minister Steven Guilbeault — who announced the federal governments’ newly-implemented rules earlier in the day — responded to Scheer’s remarks, suggesting the cap will help “address climate change and build a strong economy going forward.” “[Oil and gas] production is forecast to increase 16 per cent by 2030, so this idea that we're somehow cutting production is simply not true,” Guilbeault said of alleged resource cuts. “[Conservatives] are stuck in the past and ignoring the science of climate,” Wilkinson added.
