COP29: Blame game begins as hopes for a climate deal fade
The climate summit in Azerbaijan got off to a poor start when the country's leader described fossil fuels as a "gift from god". Two weeks on, and hopes for a finance deal are looking slim. Some $250bn has been pledged so far by richer countries to help developing nations combat the effects of climate change. But they want $1.3trn. They argue that rich nations should pay for the damage they have caused over the last few decades. But with rich nations facing economic pressures at home - and right wing parties gaining power in the US and Europe - that figure could be hard to secure.
