COP29: Greta Thunberg scorns Azerbaijan host as “authoritarian petro-state”
The annual United Nations (UN) climate summit kicked off Monday with countries readying for tough talks on finance and trade, following a year of weather disasters that have emboldened developing countries in their demands for climate cash. Delegates gathering in Baku, hope to resolve the COP29 summit's top agenda item — a deal for up to $1 trillion in annual climate finance for developing countries, replacing a target of $100 billion. Meanwhile, climate protesters at the conference and abroad alike criticized the international gathering of greenwashing. "The climate crisis is an existential crisis. 2024 is on track to become the hottest year ever recorded, and last year global greenhouse gas emissions have risen all-time high,” Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg said from Tbilisi, Georgia. “That the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNCCC) is hosting yet another climate meeting in an authoritarian petro-state (Azerbaijan) is beyond absurd." At the conference, U.S. climate envoy John Podesta said that while president-elect Donald Trump's election victory last week was “bitterly disappointing” to climate advocates, the work to contain global warming impacts would continue with commitment, passion and belief.
