COP29 summit in Azerbaijan: Challenges of a green energy transition

11/11/24
Al Jazeera English

In the heart of Baku, near the Caspian Sea, oil installations highlight the global challenge of cutting emissions. Azerbaijan, reliant on fossil fuels for 90% of its exports, hosts the annual climate negotiations. Despite plans to increase fossil fuel extraction, the country also invests in renewable energy, like a new solar plant capable of powering 110,000 homes. However, the transition to clean energy is overshadowed by financial discussions, with developing nations needing $2.4 trillion annually for a shift away from fossil fuels and climate change mitigation. The urgency is heightened by extreme weather and a US President-Elect denying climate change, raising concerns about global efforts against the climate crisis.
