Cubans remained in the dark on Monday, as the island nation continued to resolve power grid issues. It marked the fourth night of blackouts across the country, as energy officials hope to have electricity up and running by Tuesday. Protests were sparked across the Caribbean island, as people dealt with another evening without stable power. Protesters in the capital used rocks and a dumpster to block a street, hindering traffic as they banged pots to demand swift action to restore the power on the island. Police later arrived to disband the protest and clear the road. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said protesters have tried to create public disorder, commit crime and disturb the civic peace. Diaz-Canel also said that it was only a few people who “behaved indecently,” in contrast to the majority of people’s “determination of unity.” The Cuban government pointed to America’s 62-year-old embargo as the reason for the economic problems that resulted in the blackouts, while U.S. officials blamed Cuba's “long-term mismanagement” of resources and economic policy.
