CZMU protecting the island's east coast

A warning that any new development in and adjacent to national heritage systems will generally be prohibited within key components of Barbados' Natural Heritage Systems. This is according to Coastal Planner with the Coastal Zone Management Unit (CZMU), Fabian Hinds. Further, he says his department highly recommends that no new developments be permitted on the sea side of the Ermy Bourne Highway on the island's east coast. Mr. Hinds says all existing structures predate any planning policies, and no new buildings will be erected on open spaces as the intent is to protect the ambience of the area. He was speaking during a presentation titled 'Our Coastal Zone; It's History, Heritage and Management'. Mr. Hinds adds development that will significantly impact negatively on natural heritage conservation or cultural heritage assets will not be permitted, unless it can be demonstrated the proposal is over riding the national need and no alternative sites are available. He says any intent of development must attract planning permission and may have to undergo scrutiny by any entity the director of planning deems necessary.
