Dangers of thin ice across Canada as winter temperatures hover above freezing point
A balmy winter has taken Canada by storm, with people across the country dealing with a warmer holiday season — and resulting in tragedies where people have fallen through ice in Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. The Lifesaving Society says while most drownings take place during summer months, about a third of them happen between October and May. On Thursday, daily highs across the country hovered near freezing or above zero. For outdoor winter recreational activities on frozen rivers, lakes, and ponds to be considered safe, sustained freezing conditions are required. “It is from coast to coast to coast.
