Display of pomp and pageantry at Independence Day Parade
The 2024 Independence Day Parade promises to be display of pomp and pageantry to celebrate Barbados' 58th anniversary of Independence and third anniversary as a Republic. 19 armed and unarmed detachments are set to take part come Saturday at Kensington Oval. Master Chief Petty Officer Class One with the Barbados Defence Force, Austin Howell says there's a new addition, with the Barbados Fire Service Youth Cadets joining the Parade. He says the event will be conducted in two phases. The first includes the Ceremonial Parade and the National Independence Awards and Presentations. Mr. Howell says Barbados will also be honouring the late Shirley Chisholm - a former American politician who in 1968 became the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress.
