Dissolution of Thai opposition Move Forward Party is ‘uncharted territory’, says analyst
Thailand’s constitutional court on Wednesday (Aug 7) dissolved the country's main opposition party Move Forward and banned its famous former leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, from politics for 10 years. It follows a ruling that the party violated the Constitution by proposing to amend the kingdom's royal defamation law. Professor Thitinan Pongsudhirak, executive director of The Institute of Security and International Studies at Chulalongkorn University, tells CNA’s Asia First that this is “a new kind of uncharted territory that we've not seen in Thai politics”.
