Doctors mandated to report child abuse
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Children's Rights Advocate Faith Marshall-Harris is reminding doctors that they have a mandatory obligation to report any instances of child abuse to the director of the child protection authority. Ms. Marshall-Harris says medical practitioners usually report such instances of abuse even if they only suspected the nefarious act. She says thereafter, a doctor's responsibility continues through to administering treatment or becoming an expert witness in court matters as they are duty bearers. She was speaking during her presentation on the Child Protection Act at a Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners conference at the Courtyard by Marriott.
