Drone footage taken on Wednesday (June 19) showed cracked riverbeds and receding shoreline of a major reservoir in Jinan city, capital of eastern China's drought-hit Shandong province. Shandong authorities declared an orange heat alert on Wednesday morning, as several cities embrace temperatures reaching up to 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Local Jinan residents told Reuters that drought has lasted over a month. China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on Monday (June 17) activated a level-III emergency response to droughts in the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong and Henan, state news agency Xinhua reported. Chinese authorities have a four-tier drought emergency response system, with level I being the most severe, Xinhua said. China is battling extreme weather as weeks of heavy rainfall lashed the southern part of the country while sweltering heat in northern China impacted agricultural production.
