India’s Yamuna River, a sacred waterway for Hindus has been blanketed in a thick, toxic foam as pollution continues to engulf the country’s capital region. Experts say the foam is the result of untreated industrial sewage and municipal waste that has been dumped into the river. New Delhi’s drainage system, which releases waste into the river, also contributes to the alarming levels of pollution “Yamuna’s water is black throughout the year, minus the months when it actually rains,” said Vimlendu Jha, an Indian environmentalist and executive director of Swechha India, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about pollution levels in the Yamuna. “(The) water quality of Yamuna is completely E-class and, as per the Central Pollution Control Board, the water quality is not even fit for animal bathing,” he added. Jha says the lack of political will to address the issue has put the health of millions of people who depend on Yamuna’s waters at risk.
