Fishermen in Lake Puraquequara struggle to keep using boats to move around the Brazilian Amazon as a severe drought has hit the tropical rainforest for a second consecutive year, drone footage captured by Reuters showed. Local residents interviewed by Reuters explained that it’s getting harder to use canoes as a means of transport in an area that once supported vegetable farming. The Rio Negro river, one of the Amazon's main tributaries, registered a level of 15.5 meters on Wednesday, near the historic low of 12.7 meters recorded in October 2023, local media reported. This marks the second consecutive year of critical drought, which has parched the tropical forest, fuelled extensive wildfires, and stranded riverine communities due to the lack of transport as rivers become too shallow for boats to pass. - Report from Reuters
