Efforts to push farming forward in St. Andrew
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security has met with the farmers in St. Andrew with the aim of taking the farming community forward in that rural parish. Minister Indar Weir flanked by senior agricultural officials along with the MP for St. Andrew, Dr. Romel Springer engaged with the farmers during a meeting held at the Alleyne School last evening. The Minister acknowledged there are a number of outstanding issues to be resolved of which solutions must be sought. He reiterated Government's support for the farming community and signalled his commitment to setting up a St. Andrew cooperative. Minister Weir says farming is being utilised as a means of enfranchising citizens as Government cannot provide all the jobs Barbadians require. He notes with the challenges brought to open field agriculture due to climate change, officials are facilitating greenhouse and freight farming as options for those who want to move to the next level.
