Efforts to reduce regional food import
Barbados Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong is endorsing a suggestion for countries to consider putting some of their agricultural production outside of the hurricane belt. The idea was pushed by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, given the vulnerability of Barbados and other islands in the Caribbean, to storms and hurricanes. Ambassador Comissiong says the idea proposes the utilisation of lands in countries like mainland member states of CARICOM or even Venezuela. Ambassador Comissiong remains upbeat about the 25 by 2025 initiative aimed at reducing extra-regional agri-food imports by 25% by the year 2025. He says the programme is going well.
