In Addis Ababa, thousands gather to raise awareness about breast cancer, a major health threat in Ethiopia. A leading advocate, who lost her sister to the disease and is a survivor herself, highlights the issue of women remaining silent about their diagnosis. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest fatality rate for breast cancer, with a five-year survival rate below 40%. A foundation in Addis Ababa provides shelter for women from rural areas coming to the capital for treatment, offering crucial support. Access to health care remains challenging, but the government is expanding services. Early detection is emphasised as the best way to save lives, with the foundation having helped 8,500 cancer patients so far. Al Jazeera’s Jim Stenman reports from Addis Ababa.
