EU leaders pick Ursula von der Leyen for second term as bloc's president

European Union leaders have nominated Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as president of the bloc’s executive arm amid opposition from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. At the first day of the leaders' summit, a range of issues were discussed, including the Middle East, security and defence and the strategic direction of the European Union for the next five years.
