Excessive rain depleting crops for some farmers
The excessive rain has been depleting crops for some farmers. Reports indicate there is a shortage of sweet potatoes which will drive the price up to six dollars per pound, as well as okras, butternut squash, eggplant, cucumbers and carrots to name a few. However, Vice president of the Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN) local farmers can produce underground crops that will hold their own with the weather. And he suggests they plant bananas, plantains and some fruit trees to cushion the impact of the shortage of imports. Mr. Forde, who farms in St. Lucy, says while greenhouses and aquaponics systems are a solution, many farmers do not have the financial backing to start. He says already farmers have to contend with high water prices. And he is calling on Government for help in this regard.
