Previously, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration released the results of its 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which examines how people in the United States reported their experiences with mental health conditions, substance use and the pursuit of treatment in 2023. The report indicates that over 60 million people in the U.S. use marijuana, with nearly one-third of adolescents receiving mental health treatment. The findings also reveal that, in 2023, 8.9 million Americans abused opioids. Marijuana is the most frequently used illicit drug, with 21.8 percent of the population aged 12 and older (approximately 61.8 million people) using it in 2023. The report also shows that 4.5 million youth aged 12 to 17 experienced a major depressive episode during the same year, with one in five also suffering from substance use disorders. "Substance use" includes the use of opioids, alcohol, marijuana, smoking and other behaviors. CGTN Stringer hit the streets of New York to gather opinions from locals regarding this issue and the impact of marijuana on American teenagers. One American mentioned that society appears to have a passive acceptance of adolescent marijuana use, which causes anxiety about the future, adding, "I feel like something should be changed by the government."
