Finland seizes Russian-linked ship suspected of cutting undersea cables
Finland has seized a Russian-linked ship suspecting of severing the Estlink 2 cable which carries electricity across the Baltic Sea from Finland to Estonia, along with several data cables. Police and border guards boarded the Eagle S oil tanker as they launched an investigation into the incident, which is the latest in a series of incidents disrupting vital infrastructure. Estonia has said it is working alongside Finland to investigate the severed cables. Finland claims the oil tanker may have been part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” of ships aimed at skirting Western sanctions. Two undersea data cables in the Baltic Sea were damaged in November in what Germany called an act of sabotage. In September 2022, a series of underwater explosions damaged the Nord Stream pipelines in the region.
